PACIFIC COAST
                                                 Great Pacific Northwest
                                                         Oregon Coast

A picture is worth a thousand words when describing this magnificent coast line with its beautiful beaches and unusual sea cliffs.  The Oregon coast stretches from the northern most city of historic, Astoria Oregon [located at the mouth of the Columbia River] for approximately 363 miles to the California State border.

                                                             The Rock
                                                          Haystack Rock
                                                     Cannon Beach, Oregon

With the Oregon beach grasses in the foreground and the Pacific Ocean in the background, this mountain of a rock dominates the scenery on Cannon Beach.  At 235 feet, Haystack Rock is actually classified as a monolith or mountain.  This rock  was so magnificent, it silenced my mind, and all I could do was just stare.  Haystack Rock is also the home for many birds.

                                                    Dock Of The Bay
                                                     Richardson Bay
                                                   Sausalito, California

When I saw this scene of what appeared to be an old abandoned boat on Richardson Bay, it reminded me of the novel by Ernest Hemingway "Old Man And The Sea".  Richardson Bay is one of the most pristine estuaries on the Pacific Coast.  Sausalit's is known for its floating houses and is one of the most fascinating points of interest in the San Francisco Bay Area.  It is said that musical performer, Otis Redding wrote his hit song "Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay" in the Richardson Bay area of Sausalito, where he had rented a house boat in 1967 to get some peace and quiet.

                                                     EL SUR GRANDE
                                                     Big Sur, California

When you travel on Highway 1 through Big Sur California, the most inspiring and defining moment are the stunning views of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range, the Junipero Serra Peak, and the rugged terrain leading down to the magnificent Pacific Ocean.  The many climates of Big Sur result in an astonishing biodiversity of flora.  On this day, fog hung high in the mountains which provides moisture for plants at that altitude.  The name "Big Sur" derived from the original Spanish-language "El Sur Grande" meaning "the big south".  To me it means grandiose mountain and sea.

                                                       Cattle Ranching And Paradise
                                                               Big Sur, California

I'm accustomed to seeing cattle fenced in on farms and ranches, but not what seemed to be unfenced cattle, grazing with a back drop of the foggy Santa Lucia Mountain Range as it abruptly descends to meet the Pacific Ocean, at Big Sur California.  The cattle seem to have and advantage, in that they have the coolness of the sea, and graze on lush green grasses.

"The Most Beautiful Succulent That Ever Was"
                                                                      Aeonium
                                                              Big Sur, California

The most "beautiful succulent that ever was" is the description given by many when referring to the Aeonium subtropical plants.  It fits the description well with its rosette leaves and basal stems with the Pacific Ocean and Big Sur as a canvas in the background.  These succulents store water in their leaves, stems and roots.
