Grand Canyon Of The East
Linville Gorge Wilderness
Pisgah National Forest, NC
The Linville Gorge Wilderness Area is sometimes called the "Grand Canyon Of the East", because of its steepness and the layer after layer of rock cut by the Linville River and its tributaries. This area is one of the few remaining examples of and old growth forest in the Blue Ridge Mountain Range. Although logging was a major industry in the surrounding region, no industrial logging ever took place within the gorge because of the steepness of the sides and the depth of the gorge. The Linville River runs through the gorge. The area was once inhabited by the Cherokee indians who called the river the " River Of Many Cliffs".

Shenandoah Splendor
Appalachian Trail
Shenandoah National Park, VA
Every day is good day, while meandering along the Appalachian Trail in the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Shenandoah's on a cool autumn day. As is sometimes said, the Shenandoah's is an American icon that is treasured by many, and offers and excellent opportunity for solitude, and meeting interesting people.

Spectacular Blue Mountain Peaks
Adirondack Park, New York
What a wonderful drive through the north country of the United States while following the waters of the great Hudson River through the Adirondack Mountains and Peaks. Adirondack Park is the largest park in the contiguous United States, covering 6.1 million acres. Adirondack Park is larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Glacier, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park combined.

Smells Like Christmas
Grayson Highlands State Park
Mouth Of Wilson, Virginia
When the rhododendrons are in bloom, Grayson Highlands is a beautiful place to just wander through, with Mount Rogers as a backdrop, and the highland ponies for company. It doesn't get any better. Grayson Highlands and Mount Rogers is one of the few remaining habitats of the Fraser Fir, and it "smells like Christmas" when you walk through the forest. Mount Rogers is the highest point in Virginia, at 5,729 feet.

The Face Of Heaven Come To Earth
Calloway Peak
Grandfather Mountain State Park, North Carolina
The "face of heaven come to earth" was the description given by John Muir referring to Calloway Peak on Grandfather Mountain. John Muir was a naturalist and an early advocate of the preservation of the wilderness. To take this image of Julian Price Park and the Blue Ridge Mountain range in the background required rough going, using in-place ladders and cables, climbing up rocky chutes, and hand over hand scrambling over rocks to get to Calloway Peak. However, the beauty of this area made the climb worthwhile.

Snow Capped Rockies
Rocky Mountains
Pikes Peak Colorado
From the summit of Pikes Peak Colorado, you get a beautiful panoramic view of the continental divide, and range upon range of the snow capped Rocky Mountains. The Rocky Mountains stretch for more than 3,000 miles from New Mexico in Southwestern United States to the northern most part of British Columbia, in Western Canada.

America The Beautiful
Pikes Peak Park
Colorado Springs, Colorado
From the top of the 14,110 foot summit of Pikes Peak is some of the most breathtaking scenery in the United States. With its alpine wonderland of mountain reservoirs, up beyond the timberlands, and overtaking the clouds, it's no wonder that Katharine Lee Bates was inspired to write the words to the national anthem"America The Beautiful" after a trip to Pikes Peak.

Cathedral Valley
Garden Of The Gods
Colorado Springs, Colorado
With red sandstone cathedral like spires and other unusual rock formations, the Garden Of The Gods public park is one of the most fascinating parks that I have ever visited. With the very interesting town of Manitou Springs, and Pikes Peak in the background, I can see why a surveyor in 1859 was awestruck by the impressive rock formations, the greenery of the Pinon Pine Tree, and exclained that it was a fit place for the "Gods to Assemble".

Colorado Chautaqua
Chautauqua Park
Boulder, Colorado
Boulder Colorado is the home of one of the few still remaining Chautauqua's, founded in 1898. A Chautauqua consisted of various traveling shows and local assemblies in the late 19th and early 20th century. It brought various educational, musical entertainment, and culture for the whole community. Chautauqua Park was named after this movement, and the park in itself, is a great show.

Up-Ended Mountain
Flatiron Mountains
Boulder, Colorado
The Flatirons are steeply sloped and generally inclined in the same direction, but at a steeper angle than an exposed mountain slope, as indicated by the snow covered Rocky Mountains in the background. The name Flatiron was derived from the slopes resemblance to an up-ended household flat iron.

Blood Of Christ
Sangre de Cristo Mountains
Santa Fe New Mexico
Sangre de Cristo is Spanish for "Blood Of Christ". It is said that the Sangre de Cristo Mountains was given this name because of the red color of the mountain range at sunrise and sunset. New Mexico is referred to as the "Land Of Enchantment". The Sangre de Cristo Mountains with the quaint and picturesque city of Santa Fe, and its Spanish Pueblo revival look in the foreground, is truly enchanting.

Kilimanjaro Awaits
Mount Kilimanjaro
Tanzania, Africa
The trek to Mount Kilimanjaro [the highest mountain in Africa and the fourth highest of the seven summits in the world at 19,341 feet] was the most adventurous, rewarding, awe inspiring, and spiritual challenge I've ever experience. Low temperatures, and occasional high winds made the climb to Uhuru Peak [at night] a difficult and dangerous trek.

Cone Of Kilimanjaro
Mawenzi Peak
Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, Africa
Mawenzi Peak was the first of the three volcanic cones of Mount Kilimanjaro that fellow trekkers and I observed during our [trek] to reach Uhuru Peak (19,341 feet). At 15,000 feet, Mawenzi Peak is the most easterly of the three inactive volcano cones on Kilimanjaro. In the saddle or valley below, Mawenzi contains high altitude tundra vegetation in the form of dwarf shrubs, grasses, mosses and lichens. Tree growth is hindered by low temperatures and short growing seasons.

Shadows Of Mount Meru
Mount Meru
Tanzania, Africa
What a relaxing view of Mount Meru as seen from the former Moivaro Coffee Plantation Lodge outside the town of Arusha. Mount Meru is the fifth highest mountain in Africa at 14,980 feet. The several small cone craters probably reflect numerous episodes of volcanic activity.

Natures Miricle
Zebra Rock
Kilimanjaro National Park
Tanzania, Africa
As we trekked along the Marangu Route in our quest to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, there in plain view along the trail was one of "nature's miracles". A collection of rocks, with black and white stripes, like those of a Zebra. Incidentally African Zebras do not venture this far from the African plain.

On Top Of Old Smoky
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Tennessee-North Carolina
Hiking on the crest of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (some 70 miles) on the Appalachian Trail, and along the Tennessee-North Carolina border is challenging and magnificent at the same time. Prior to the arrival of English explorers, the Cherokee Indians controlled much of the region, and The Great Smoky Mountains. They called the mountains Shaconage, meaning "blue, like smoke".

Sky Islands
Rincon Mountains
Saguaro National Park
Tucson, Arizona
The Rincon Mountains are a group of [mountains] within the Sonoran Desert often referred to as "Sky Islands" because they are isolated by the surrounding lowlands of the [Sonoran] and Chihuahuan deserts. Although very hot and dry, the hike on the King Canyon Trail was very interesting among all the Saguaros and Prickly Pear Cactus.

3000 Feet Below
Plaeau Point
South Rim
Grand Canyon National Park
Plateau Point is 3000 feet below the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and is a popular destination for day hikers. It is a 4.5 mile hike to Indian Garden Camp Ground, and a 1.5 mile hike north of the [Indian Garden Camp Ground] on the Plateau Point Trail. The Colorado River can also be viewed from the plateau, about 1,300 feet from above.
